Chlorhexidine digluconate is a cationic biguanide. Chlorhexidine has amino groups of cell proteins. It penetrates through membranes of bacterial cells, settles in cytoplasm and changes function of the membrane, preventing oxygen intake, what reduces ATP level and causes death of the cells. It destructs DNA and impairs DNA synthesis in microorganisms. It provides for durable persistent antimicrobial activity, preventing growth of microorganisms within min 6 hours upon its use.
Chlorhexidine digluconate has rapid and expressed bactericidal effect in relation to gram positive and gram negative bacteria (Treponema pallidum, Chlamidia spp., Ureaplasma spp., Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Gardnerellavaginalis, Bacteroides fragilis), protozoa (Trichomonas vaginalis), viruses (Herpes virus). In presence of blood or other organic substances antimicrobial activity of chlorhexidine digluconate is not impaired.
