An additional source of iodine and selenium; it contributes to improvement of functional state of the thyroid gland, normalization of metabolism, boosting immunity; it has antioxidative properties.
Potassium iodide – 0.065 mg, selenium oxide – 0.00275 mg, excipients.
Basic biological role of iodine consists in supporting thyroid gland functioning and synthesizing its hormones – thyroxin and thriiodothyronine. As of today, iodine is the only known microelement, participating in synthesis of these hormones. Physiological role of thyroid hormones is crucial, as it includes control of intensity of basal metabolism, influence on osmotic, lipid and carbohydrate metabolisms.
Being a hormone, thyroxin is in constant connection with other endocrine glands, especially with pituitary gland and sex glands; it regulates functioning of the brain, the nervous and the cardiovascular systems, and stimulates growth and mental development of a child. Deficiency of iodine, which is a structural element of thyroid hormone, is often a hidden cause of numerous diseases.
Selenium is a microelement, considered one of the most important elements for a human, which participates in numerous vital processes, taking place in human body, viz. synthesis of triiodthyronine, which is a thyroid hormone, in elimination of heavy metals from the body, in lipid, carbohydrate metabolisms, in oxidation-reduction processes; it reacts with vitamins, enzymes. There is a close connection between iodine and selenium: iodine doesn’t function without selenium in the body that is why simultaneous deficiency of iodine and selenium leads to more severe form of hypothyreosis, than deficiency of iodine alone. Selenium deficiency in the body reduces functional activity of thyroid hormones that is why providing body with these microelements is of great importance.
In addition to the above properties, selenium has powerful antioxidant properties; it promotes cell membranes protection and prevention of free radicals formation, thus decreasing risk of proliferative diseases.
Selenium deficiency leads to decrease in immunity, growth retardation, skin, hair, nail diseases, development of cardiovascular diseases, atherosclerosis, allergic reactions, genital function disturbance, early ageing.
